Mick received a warm and engaged response from University of Minnesota Friends of the Library members on Sunday, February 25th. His presentation Real to Reel: Documentary as Authentic Public History generated a lot of interest in his work and the valued role university and library archives play in documentary filmmaking. Thanks to the U of M FOL for inviting Mick to share his work and ideas about public history.

We all have heroes: maybe it's a football player or your favorite singer or make-believe, like a super-hero. But the real definition of a hero is someone who spends their life serving other people, even if it is dangerous or they risk their lives doing it. The people that I do my films about are all real-life heroes. They didn't brag and they weren't interested in their own fame. They wouldn't be interested in Facebook or selfies or how many hits they have on YouTube. Instead, they spent their lives doing brave things and even putting their lives in danger for others without any praise or publicity. —Mick Caouette, speaking to 4th graders last week
